The central districts of the city of Perpignan.

Perpignan is the only city in the department. It is the cultural and commercial centre as well as being by far the most densely populated of the areas. Residential towns circling Perpignan to the west and south.

These villages have grown significantly in the past decades. They are popular with commuters and families. They generally have better amenities and services as well as superior public transport.
Roussillon plain

Roussillon plain

The plains of Roussillon south of the Tet between the A9 motorway and the coast.

A relatively flat area inland from the major beach resorts. Providing convenient access to the coast away from the seasonal crowds of tourists and more year-round living.
Salanque

Salanque

The salt-plains north of the river Tet, including Rivesaltes.

Towns and villages on the flat plains to the north of Perpignan and the river Tet. Rivesaltes is the largest town but the growing villages of Pia and Bompas can be considered suburbs of Perpignan.
Alberes

Alberes

Relatively large villages along the Alberes chain of hills between Le Boulou and Argeles-su-Mer.

Large villages with good access to the coast and Spain. Good for mountain biking and hiking the Alberes hills. Popular with foreigners living both full-time and part-time in the area. A better selection of cafés and restaurants that other inland areas. Here you can find larger properties that are located close to amenities.
Cote Vermeille

Attractive old fishing ports along a rocky coastline where the Pyrenees meet the sea.

A series of attractive fishing ports along a stunning, rocky coastline. The most beautiful of the areas and very popular with wealthier second-home owners. The towns are more lively out of season than the Littoral but can become very congested in summer, especially Collioure.
Littoral

Littoral

Coastal towns with sandy beachfronts. A mixture of old fishing villages and modern resorts.

These beach resorts were all created in the 20th century and are attached to old villages set back from the coast. The old villages tend to be more active year-round than the resorts. The area is traditionally popular with second-home owners but has a growing resident population of retirees and young families.
Vallespir

Vallespir

The lower Vallespir valley between Le Boulou and Amelie-les-Bains, centred on Ceret.

A popular region for expats, centred on the historic, arty town of Ceret. It provides a nice mix of wild countryside with lively towns as well as being convenient to Spain.
Conflent

Conflent

The upper Tet Valley from Rodes to Odette, centred on Prades

A wide valley in between Perpignan and the Ski resorts. Centred around Prades it has numerous beautiful villages and historic sites. Great for hiking while still being accessible. Also has a train line.
Les Aspres

Les Aspres

Numerous villages in the hills around Thuir. A region of fruit trees, cork forests and vines.

Les Aspres covers quite a large area divided into low rolling countryside and higher forested hills. Agriculture in the lower part is a mixture of vines and fruit trees while the higher areas are a mixture of forestry and livestock. The main town is Thuir. The lower villages are popular with commuters who want to live rurally and the higher ones for their solitude.
Tet Valley

Tet Valley

Towns and large villages along the Tet just to the west of Perpignan. Known as Le Ribéral.

The most populous and accessible of the three river valleys. A series of towns on either side of the river from the outskirts of Perpignan to Bouletenere. The most popular ones are Baho, Le Soler and Ille-sur-Tet.
Agly Valley

The valleys and hills in the north west of the department, also known as the Fenuilledes.

Rugged and dramatic countryside featuring old towns and remote villages, most based around viticulture and winemaking. There are no large towns in this area and property prices are relatively low.
Haut-Vallespir

Haut-Vallespir

Mountain villages accessed via Arles-sur-Tech, surrounded by forests and sheep farms.

Much less populated than the lower Vallespir, this mountainous, wooded region has secluded towns and villages with great access to hiking and cycling and a notable Catalan culture.
Capcir

Capcir

A high mountain plateau in the Pyrenees. Popular for winter sports.

A high mountain plateau containing all the major ski resorts as well as remote mountain villages. Close to Andorra and the most remote of all the area from Perpignan and the coast.
