About this place ...
Saint-Jacques
Saint-Jacques is quite a large historic district of central Perpignan which can be thought of of as three distinct sectors.
The "Quartier Saint-Jacques" which consists of narrow, dirty, run-down streets between the Couvent des Dominicains, rue Saint Francois de Paule and Place Cassagnes is the historic (and notorious) Gypsy quarter of Perpignan. The upper part of the quartier is also home to poorer North-African families, making it an uneasy melting pot.
It contains some interesting sights, such as the Covent des Carmes cultural centre, the Church of Saint-Jacques de Perpignan and the Place de Puig. Place Cassagnes is the site of a daily market very popular with locals.
On top of the hill on the east side of Bd Arastide Briand, lies a quieter, more desirable residential sector on either side of Avenue Mermoz. Here you will find nice local shops surrounded by streets of established larger homes.
Finally the area on the northern side of the Couvent des Dominicains and on the lower side of the old city walls along Bd Wilson and Bd Bourrat is also quieter and more desirable, partly because it sits opposite the nice Park "Bir-Hakeim" and partly because it is separated by the city wall from the Gypsy quarter.
Positives
Considerations
Walking distance to the city center. Site of several impressive historic buildings. Certain sectors have nice leafy streets.
The central section of the district is very run down and people may find it intimidating.
